Little Children
I’ve had the opportunity to watch this movie a couple of days ago and I am very thankful that i watched it. It is a simple movie by director Todd Fields. Actually simple might not be a very good adjective to describe the depth of this movie. This movie manage to tell a very complicated and disturbing stories of the people in a “beautiful” way. These characters portrayed in the movie might just be the people that were living in our neighborhood.
Kate Winslet as Sara is very very very convincing in her role as the housewife who is boring and tiresome of her responsibility as the mother a small little girl. She plays this role to perfection like she always did in her previous movies. I must say, she is one of the most talented actress working today. I have yet to see her performance that is average or bad. So far, they are all outstanding. When she acted, she totally immersed in her character. I totally forget that she is Kate Winslet. She became the character she play and that is, in my opinion the definition of a great actor. I really believe that she was Rose in Titanic, Marrianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility and Iris in The Holiday. It must also be noted that she was nominated for an Oscar for this role. It was her fourth nominations so far. The most for an actress below the age of 30. She is yet to win but i suppose she will eventually. Well.. she MUST at least get one of those golden statute. She just have to. To live in the world where Halle Berry won an Oscar for Best Actress but Kate Winslet didnt get any is not right. Something is seriously not right!!!
Back to the movie, Patrick Wilson on the other hand who play the character of “The Prom King” is also really good. He played this character with such longing and sadness without overdoing it. He possess a talent that is quite rare where he manage to convey a certain emotion by not even uttering one word. The scene where he watch a group of young boys in the neighborhood playing skateboards at night while he was supposed to study for his bar exam which he had already failed twice was brilliant. It is as if he brought us to a an emotional journey in that few seconds. He let us travel and indulge in his sadness in that very brief moment. A job well done .
There are a lot of other characters in this movie and each character evoke various emotions from the viewers. These characters, with their flaws were played to perfection. They are just like the people around us, people that we see every day. What we probably didnt see is the turmoil these people are fighting on a daily basis. They are uncertain about their lives, they are not sure to what their lives would be but they keep living.
I love the fact that this movie try not to glorify the ending. It was the way it should be. A must -watch for everyone. Highly recommended from me. It might not be everyone type of movie but the sight of Miss Winslet in a red swimsuit is definitely going to make this worth your time. Mark my words!
